Play Ball with Ozzie Smith

Though Ozzie Smith has been retired for nearly a decade, he's still flashing his Gold Glove leather.

Each year during Induction Weekend, the Hall of Fame shortstop takes the field to turn double plays in "Wizard-like" fashion at historic Doubleday Field, all to support education. The proceeds from the "Play Ball with Ozzie" event support the Hall of Fame's education department.

Teams of two make a donation to the Hall of Fame for the opportunity to turn double plays with Smith, regarded by many as the greatest defensive shortstop in history. In addition, other Hall of Famers get into uniform for the event. George Brett, Gary Carter, and Ryne Sandberg have participated in the past.

"I think it gives people the opportunity to somewhat feel what it's like to be out on the field," Smith said in 2003.

"It's always a wonderful time to get a chance to visit with some of the people. It's for a great cause: the educational program here at the Hall of Fame. Hopefully it continues and continues to get bigger."

Since his induction in 2002, Smith, who believes strongly in the importance of education, has served as the Hall of Fame's educational ambassador.

"As the educational ambassador, I have had the opportunity [to go to] my daughter's school and [participate in] telecommunications, which is something I never had the chance to do growing up, and it was great - it really makes a difference to these kids."

For a $1,000 donation to the Hall of Fame’s education program, "Play Ball with Ozzie" provides participants the opportunity to play second and first base with Smith at shortstop. The participants each receive an autographed baseball, a videotape of their experience and a photo taken with the Hall of Famer. As an exclusive opportunity, Hall of Fame Members can participate for just $750.

Participants have included fathers and sons, brothers and sisters, husbands and wives, and teammates from youth baseball teams. Among the participants, groups from all over the nation have participated. Even a fan from Japan took advantage of the opportunity to play alongside Ozzie.
